The Life of Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı
Born in Crete in 1886 into the esteemed Kabaağaçlızade family, Cevat Şakir received his early education at Robert College before reading Modern History at Oxford University, where he immersed himself in classical Mediterranean studies.
In 1925, due to an article published in the Istanbul periodical Resimli Hafta, he was sentenced to three years of fortress exile in the remote Aegean fishing town of Bodrum. This forced relocation became one of the most fruitful chapters in modern Turkish literature.
Enchanted by Bodrum's ancient Greek and Carian roots, its Aegean myths, and the resilient lives of its local sponge divers, he developed a profound devotion to the region. Even after his sentence ended, he chose to stay and adopted the pseudonym The Fisherman of Halicarnassus.
Alongside fellow scholars Sabahattin Eyüboğlu and Azra Erhat, he pioneered the legendary Blue Cruise (Mavi Yolculuk) expeditions, shaping the intellectual movement known as "Blue Humanism"—which celebrated Anatolia as the primordial cradle of Western civilization.
"To love Bodrum is to accept the sea and humanity in their purest essence. This is not a place of exile, but a realm of eternal freedom."

The Pen That Greenery Brought to Bodrum
During his exile years, Cevat Şakir ordered seeds and saplings from botanical societies worldwide. Many of the eucalyptus, bougainvillea, jacaranda, rubber, and mimosa trees that embellish Bodrum's streets and castle today were planted by his own hands. He transformed not only the region's literary identity, but also its botanical landscape.
